Pure Live Seed (PLS) Calculator

Calculate PLS percentage and adjusted seeding rate using seed purity and germination values.

How It Works

PLS (%) = (Purity × Germination) ÷ 100

Adjusted Rate = Desired Rate ÷ (PLS ÷ 100)

PLS Calculator FAQ

What is Pure Live Seed (PLS)?

Pure Live Seed represents the percentage of viable, pure seed in a seed lot after accounting for purity and germination.

Why is PLS important?

PLS ensures accurate seeding rates, especially for forage, cover crops, and native grasses.

Understanding Pure Live Seed (PLS)

Pure Live Seed (PLS) is a critical calculation used in forage and cover crop planting. It adjusts for both seed purity and germination to determine how much viable seed is actually being planted. Without using PLS, growers may unintentionally under- or over-seed.

For example, if seed purity is 95% and germination is 90%, the PLS equals 85.5%. To achieve a true 10 lb/acre planting rate, more bulk seed must be applied to compensate for non-viable material.
