Farmers use bin capacity calculations to plan harvest storage, determine how many bushels can fit in a bin, and estimate grain weight in pounds or tons. Grain bin capacity depends on bin diameter, grain depth, and grain type.
Grain bins are typically cylindrical. To calculate bin capacity, you first calculate the volume of the cylinder (in cubic feet) and then convert that volume into bushels.
Volume = π × (Radius²) × Height
Bushels = Cubic Feet ÷ 1.244
Pounds = Bushels × Pounds per Bushel
Diameter = 30 ft → Radius = 15 ft
Height = 20 ft
Volume = π × 15² × 20 = 14,137 ft³
Bushels = 14,137 ÷ 1.244 = 11,366 bu
Corn = 56 lb/bushel
Pounds = 11,366 × 56 = 636,496 lb
Tons = 636,496 ÷ 2,000 = 318.25 tons
